Give Peace A Chance

Today began with a visit to Rammohan Roy College to visit with some students that are studying... (you guessed it).. Science. It seems everyone here studies Science/Medicine, or Engineering. We met with some students and saw some experiments being done on mice with tumors. No pictures of the mice, but here are some recent graduates and faculty/staff:
Then we visited the Raja Rammohan Roy Museum. He was the father of the Indian Renaissance and did the following: ended Sati and implemented other religous reforms, began implementing western education, was the father of journalism and free speech, and discovered curry (not quite, but he did a lot). It looks like I need to spend a little more time on him in World History now. He did do a lot for the status of women in his time. I had a great chat with the old lady running the museum about opportunities for women in India. We followed this up with a visit to the American Center at the US Consulate. A combination of schools have been working on a year long project to implement Peace into their curriculum with a program called Teach "Peace to Reach Peace" and this was the culmination of their efforts. There were great displays, speeches, skits, and dance. A artistic banner was created and signed to be sent to Pakistan. It was great time of interaction with students and teachers, a few TEA Alumni from Nebraska were also there. In India, history and religion are often conveyed through dance, but the video will have to wait until later when I have a faster connection at home. This should give a taste of the evening:

  2. Hi Brian. Intriguing that you've been hearing so much about Raja Rammohan Roy. Here in Rajkot, Swami Vivekananda is the man. His image is all over the school that Lisa and I are visiting, and there's a mission here that he established in the name of his guru, Ramakrishna. I gather Vivekananda was a national and international figure; are you hearing anything about him? (My blog has some images: http://tbessias.wordpress.com) I love your blog title, by the way! A great distillation of what Arun was telling us on the Bangalore tour.
